UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey, has announced the autumn budget of 2026. It combines cost-of-living support with measures that are meant to stimulate investments, strengthen national security and relieve the burden on public finances

The budget comes amid high inflation rates, rising borrowing costs and the economic repercussions of the Middle East. With public debt exceeding £3 trillion, the government is under pressure to provide financial assistance to households, improve public services, and increase defence spending without undermining investor confidence.

One of the key measures of the budget is the £100 payment for households in council tax bands A-D, along with plans to abolish standing charges from household gas bills starting from 2027. The government will also decrease fuel duty and impose a tariff suspension on more than 100 supermarket items in order to limit pressure on household budgets.

The Chancellor has also announced a £4.7 billion first time buyers’ support package, including a new scheme that should allow eligible buyers to purchase new-build homes with smaller deposits. In addition, the government has promised to finance its Defence Investment Plan completely by reprioritising capital spending across departments to address a £4.7 billion funding gap.

However, the Budget’s immediate relief measures must be weighed against longer-term fiscal constraints. Healey has cut down the government’s projected headroom to £15 billion in 2029-30, leaving a relatively limited buffer against weaker growth or additional expenditure pressure.

These measures also raise questions regarding effectiveness. Energy payments may provide short-term relief, but they do not resolve the structural causes of high living costs. In the same vein, housing support could improve access to homeownership but its impact will depend on supply and affordability.

Ultimately, the Budget’s success will depend on whether short-term support translates into sustainable economic growth without leaving public finances more exposed to future shocks.
