Key Points

  • Birmingham Airport raised £80,500 at its second annual charity dinner, sponsored by facilities management firm Mitie.
  • The gala follows an earlier “Race the Plane” exercise, where cyclists on static bikes competed against a live flight to Cancun, Mexico, generating £80,000.
  • Together, the two events brought total funds raised through the corporate partnership past the initial £250,000 target.
  • The money will buy specialist equipment, upgrade facilities, and fund research at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, which treats more than 100,000 young patients each year.

Birmingham (Birmingham Express) October 21, 2026 – Birmingham Airport (BHX) has officially generated £80,500 for its corporate charity partner, Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, following a gala fundraising dinner.

The financial boost pushes the total accumulated funding under the two-year regional partnership beyond £250,000, surpassing the airport’s original charity contribution milestone.

How Was the £80,000 Raised by Birmingham Airport?

The fundraising achievement was driven by major initiatives organised by airport leadership and corporate partners throughout the West Midlands business community.

The main contribution stemmed from the second annual Birmingham Airport Charity Dinner, hosted in autumn 2026 and sponsored by partner company Mitie, raising £80,500.

Earlier in the year, 14 corporate teams participated in the “Race the Plane” challenge at the airfield.

Cyclists pedalled static bikes inside the terminal in a real-time race against a live TUI flight departing from Birmingham to Cancun, Mexico, securing £80,000 in direct donations.

What Have Key Community Leaders and Stakeholders Said About the Success?

Speaking on the collaborative effort, local parliamentarians and business directors praised the dedication of staff and corporate supporters across the West Midlands.

As reported by the official corporate press release of Birmingham Airport, Richard Gill, Commercial Director of Birmingham Airport, stated that:

“To see the donations coming in shows the support from the region for this fantastic cause. It was a truly great day that boosted our partnership total with the charity.”

Highlighting the Parliamentary engagement with the airfield’s social value initiatives, Saqib Bhatti, Member of Parliament for Meriden and Solihull East, observed that:

“It was a pleasure to kick off the Race the Plane event at Birmingham Airport, where teams from across the business community came together for a truly unique challenge. Most importantly, the event raised vital funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital, making a real difference to young patients and their families.”

Facilities management provider Mitie actively supported the airport’s fundraising campaign as primary event sponsor.

As reported in the airport’s event release, Helen Longfils, Group Director of Social Value at Mitie, stated that:

“We’re incredibly proud to stand alongside Birmingham Airport. It’s a brilliant example of what our Social Value commitments are all about, bringing communities together, supporting wellbeing, and creating positive impact where it matters most.”

Hospital representatives confirmed that the total sum collected will transform hospital infrastructure and pediatric care.

As reported by the communications department of Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, Helen Miles, Director of Philanthropy and Partnerships, stated that:

“Since the start of this partnership, Birmingham Airport has raised over £250,000 for our brave patients, and that incredible figure continues to grow. The airport’s support has already transformed experiences and environments for our patients, and continues to allow us to do even more for the 100,000 sick kids our hospital cares for each year.”

Background to the Corporate Partnership

Birmingham Airport selected Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity as its official corporate charity partner to deliver social value across the West Midlands region.

The hospital treats more than 100,000 infants, children, and young adults every year, providing specialist pediatric care, clinical research, and emergency treatments.

The initial partnership was created with a baseline pledge to raise £250,000 through joint events, employee volunteering, terminal donor points, and corporate sponsorship.

Reaching this target ahead of schedule demonstrates the scale of collaboration between aviation transport hubs and charitable institutions in the West Midlands.

Predictions: How Will This Development Affect Sick Children and the Local Community?

The funding will directly benefit thousands of pediatric patients and their families who rely on Birmingham Children’s Hospital for specialized clinical care.

Financially, the £250,000 total allows the hospital trust to purchase advanced medical equipment, upgrade pediatric wards, and fund pioneering medical research without diverting money from core operational NHS budgets.

For the regional business sector, this milestone establishes a successful framework for corporate social responsibility in the West Midlands.

Future corporate partnerships are likely to adopt similar creative fundraising mechanisms, strengthening ties between local transport infrastructure, commercial suppliers, and essential healthcare providers.
