British Pakistani 27 year old Rayan Mughal has been jailed and sentenced to 5 years and 10 months in prison by the Birmingham Crown Court. This sentencing and charge has come after his wife, Mariryyah Raees secretly filmed his assault and verbal abuse.
The couple were together for 3 years under an islamic marriage during which their relationship rapidly deteriorated and became toxic with intimidation, and physical abuse. The prosecutor noted that Mughal was in the regular habit of assaulting and mistreating his wife.
The first severe attack was in March 20th 2025 during which an argument over clothing became an unprovoked and prolonged attack where Mughal grabbed his wife by the throat, strangling her in periods for 10 minutes and punching her body.
The violence also remerged on 26th May 2025 when Mariyyah Raees was hosting a personal friend party when her husband told her to come to the bedroom where he slapped her and threatened to slam a glass bottle on her head before violently grabbing her thumb. He dragged her around the joint with enough force to snap the bone. This attack only stopped when a friend screamed and Raees was allowed to secure a radiography to confirm her fracture to the thumb.
The final attack on 8th October 2025 was when the video evidence was recorded on Raees’ mobile phone. The attacker Mughal bashed her head against a sofa, pinned her down and gripped her throat while also declaring that, “I’m going to f****** murder you’ and ‘you deserve to get cheated on.”
Raees managed to summon her mother to the couple’s flat and interrupt the attack, following which the victim contacted the police. Investigators gathered evidence including medical photographs, detailed finger marks around her neck, bodily bruises, and X-rays of her broken thumb.
Mariyyah Raees delivered a powerful victim statement from the witness box at Court stating that, “I won’t let you be the reason another woman goes through this or loses her life because of you. This is my final message to you. I hope you feel what it’s like to be stripped of everything, like you did to me. I hope you live with regret and it eats you up everyday. I will never understand what you did and I’m glad I don’t understand because you’re f***** in the head and evil to the core. You deserve to be where you are today. You should be ashamed of yourself.”
Mughal initially denied all allegations but entered a guilty plea for two counts of assault: occasional actual bodily harm and one court of inflicting grievous bodily harm, intentional strangulation and threats to kill.
