As reported by Nick Horner of Birmingham Live, emergency services were alerted to land off Strawberry Lane in Great Wyrley shortly before 9:00am on Saturday, 5 September 2026. Responders arrived at the scene near the Wyrley and Essington Branch Canal Local Nature Reserve following calls regarding a medical emergency involving an infant.

As reported by Christopher Mallett and Olivia Williams of the Liverpool Echo, West Midlands Ambulance Service dispatched two land ambulances, a paramedic officer, and the Midlands Air Ambulance to the rural location. Despite the rapid deployment of specialized air and ground medical teams, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and the child was pronounced deceased at the scene.

What happened during the emergency response in Great Wyrley?

As reported by a spokesperson for the West Midlands Ambulance Service to Birmingham Live: “We were called to reports of a medical emergency near to Strawberry Lane at 8.39am on Saturday”. The spokesperson added that crews arrived promptly to find an infant girl in cardiac arrest, but despite the immediate medical intervention administered by paramedics and air ambulance doctors, “sadly, nothing could be done to save her”.

Staffordshire Police were called to the scene by ambulance personnel at approximately 8.45am to assist with the incident. Officers established a perimeter around the woodland and adjacent fishing platforms while medical crews worked.

As reported by The Mirror, drone photography captured from above the area showed at least four tents, camping chairs, and equipment pitched close together beside the fishing platforms along the canal nature reserve, confirming reports that a family group was camping on the land.

What is the current status of the police investigation?

As reported by UKNiP, Staffordshire Police maintained a visible presence across the Strawberry Lane area throughout Saturday and Sunday to conduct enquiries and secure the area.

In an official statement released by Staffordshire Police, Detective Inspector Katie Gregory stated: “While the investigation remains at an early stage, this is an isolated incident and we understand that the child’s family was camping in the area. The death is being treated as unexplained at this time”.

A force spokesperson further added: “Officers are still in the area carrying out enquiries to understand more about what happened and to provide reassurance to the local community”. Police have confirmed that enquiries are ongoing and that several lines of investigation are being followed to reconstruct the events leading up to the infant’s cardiac arrest. No arrests have been made in connection with the fatality.

How has the local community responded to the tragedy?

As reported by the Express, local elected representatives have called for restraint and privacy for the bereaved family following the tragedy.

Robert Duncan, district councillor for Cheslyn Hay, issued a public statement via social media regarding the incident: “I know how deeply upsetting news like this is for our community. It’s important that we allow the emergency services the space they need to complete their work with dignity and care. As soon as the full and confirmed details are formally shared with me, I will provide a further update to residents. Until then, please avoid speculation and allow the family and responders the privacy and respect they deserve”.

What is the background of this development?

The woodland and nature reserve off Strawberry Lane lies along the historic Wyrley and Essington Branch Canal, a area situated between Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay in South Staffordshire. The local nature reserve is widely used by local residents, anglers, and walkers.

While wild camping or informal overnight stays near fishing waters occur periodically across UK canal reserves, emergency incidents involving infants in such settings are rare. The involvement of multiple emergency agencies—including the West Midlands Ambulance Service, Staffordshire Police, and the Midlands Air Ambulance—highlights the standard high-priority protocol triggered across the United Kingdom when a pediatric cardiac arrest is reported. When an infant death occurs outside a medical facility, standard police procedure dictates that the fatality be designated as “unexplained” pending formal post-mortem examinations and coroner inquiries, regardless of whether suspicious circumstances are immediately apparent.

How will this development affect local residents and visiting families?

Impact on the Local Community

The presence of emergency vehicles, air ambulance landings, and subsequent police cordons in a quiet semi-rural area inevitably causes distress among local residents. The confirmation of an infant death typically leads to heightened emotional responses within small communities like Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay. Local authority communications, such as those issued by Councillor Robert Duncan, serve to manage community anxiety, discourage online rumours, and maintain public order while police operations continue.

Impact on Emergency Services and Investigating Authorities

Staffordshire Police and the local coroner’s office will experience an immediate operational demand as formal investigations proceed. Detectives will focus on gathering forensic evidence from the campsite, compiling medical records, and securing pathologist reports to determine the precise medical cause of death. Furthermore, emergency service personnel who attended the scene—particularly paramedics and air ambulance crews who delivered critical care under difficult outdoor conditions—will be subject to standard post-incident welfare protocols to address the psychological impact of pediatric fatalities.

Impact on Recreational Use of the Nature Reserve

In the short term, visitors to the Wyrley and Essington Branch Canal Local Nature Reserve can expect localized access restrictions surrounding the specific fishing platforms and woodland areas off Strawberry Lane. Landowners, local councils, and canal authorities may subsequently review site safety, monitoring practices, and regulations regarding overnight stays or informal camping on nature reserve grounds once the official findings of the investigation are published.
