Launches are met with accusations by Seoul of undermining peace and security in the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea on Thursday, 29 October launched around 10 short-range ballistic missiles towards the sea off its eastern coast, according to South Korea’s military, intensifying tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

The missiles were reportedly launched near the coastal city of Wonsan at around 12.30pm local time, travelling about 250km before landing in waters off the peninsula. According to Japan’s Defence Ministry, the projectiles did not appear to have entered Japan’s exclusive economic zone. South Korea has condemned the launches as a violation of UN’s Security Council’s resolutions and have coordinated with the U.S. and Japan in response.

This comes in a time amid growing tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang, following border incidents and renewed military demonstrations. North Korea has also threatened to restore propaganda loudspeakers along the border, further inflaming the situation.

Beyond the immediate confrontation, the launches demonstrate Pyongyang’s continued efforts to demonstrate its military strength and reinforce its deterrent strategy. Missile-testing also signals its opposition to U.S.-led security arrangements in the region, placing more pressure on Washington and its allies to be able to defend themselves adequately.

For South Korea, these developments reiterate the importance of military coordination with the United States and Japan.  But, this might escalate the vicious cycle, especially if further border incidents occur.

The key issue is whether repeated military demonstrations would remain a form of strategic signalling or increase risks of miscalculation. Although latest launches did not appear to actually threaten Japanese territorial waters directly, continued weapons testing and worsening relations leave the Korean Peninsula especially prone to further escalation.
