BIRMINGHAM (Birmingham Express) September 12, 2026 — Egypt’s flag carrier, EgyptAir, has formally announced the introduction of a new year-round direct flight service connecting Cairo International Airport (CAI) and Birmingham Airport (BHX) starting on 27 October 2026. Operating four days per week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, the brand-new non-stop link will represent Birmingham Airport’s first and only direct flight connection to the Egyptian capital.

As reported by the Birmingham Airport Media Office, the route expands the airport’s regional Egyptian footprint beyond existing leisure options to Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh. Services will be flown using EgyptAir’s newly acquired fleet of Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, offering point-to-point transit as well as ongoing connections via Cairo across the carrier’s international network in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

What Are the Official Statements from Airport and Airline Leadership?

Addressing the strategic importance of the route addition, Matt Hazelwood, Chief Commercial Officer of Birmingham Airport, stated: “We are delighted to connect our passengers directly to a bucket-list destination like Cairo, a city that effortlessly blends thousands of years of incredible history with a contemporary culture, via our new partnership with EGYPTAIR. This route will strengthen our Egyptian offering, providing greater choice for our customers direct from Birmingham Airport.”

Representing the flag carrier’s operational strategy, Captain Mohamed Elian of EgyptAir Airlines stated: “Expanding our footprint in the UK by adding Birmingham to our route map reflects our commitment to a market that holds tremendous significance for EGYPTAIR with operating 4 weekly flights between the two cities onboard our newest B737MAX8.”

Captain Elian further elaborated on the route’s wider accessibility, stating that “Cairo serves as a magnificent gateway, and with this new service, we are making it easier than ever for both business and leisure travellers to experience Egypt. Beyond the capital, our extensive domestic network offers optimized connectivity, allowing passengers to step off their flight from Birmingham and quickly find themselves relaxing on the Red Sea coast or exploring the timeless treasures of Upper Egypt.”

Furthermore, as reported by the State Information Service (SIS) of Egypt, Birmingham represents the airline’s third major operational node within the United Kingdom, complementing its long-standing scheduled services into London Heathrow and Manchester Airport.

What Are the Fleet and Operational Specifications of the Service?

According to flight schedule filings published by AeroRoutes, the airline initially slated three weekly flights for the Northern Winter 2026/27 scheduling period before raising planned frequencies to four services per week. The deployment of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 expands one-way seat capacity between Cairo and Birmingham to over 14,000 seats across the winter season.

The scheduled timetable sees flight MS769 departing Cairo International Airport Terminal 3 at 08:40 local time and arriving at Birmingham Airport at 12:30. The return leg, flight MS770, departs Birmingham Airport at 13:30, arriving back in Cairo at 20:40 local time.

What Is the Background of This Particular Development?

The introduction of direct Cairo-Birmingham flights marks a key milestone in EgyptAir’s broader international fleet and network expansion plan. The United Kingdom represents one of Egypt’s most established international markets for trade, diaspora transport, and bilateral tourism. Historically, passengers originating from the West Midlands and broader central England region had to rely on indirect hub transfers through mainland European airports or travel overland to London Heathrow or Manchester to access non-stop services to Cairo.

Over recent years, Birmingham Airport has actively pursued direct long-haul and regional flag-carrier links to serve the West Midlands’ diverse population of over four million people. The addition of Cairo builds upon BHX’s existing Egyptian route profile, which previously focused on holiday charters to coastal resort destinations such as Sharm El-Sheikh and Hurghada. By securing EgyptAir as a Star Alliance partner carrier, Birmingham Airport enhances its non-stop scheduled international connectivity.

What Is the Prediction for How This Development Will Affect the Target Audience?

The launch of four weekly non-stop flights between Cairo and Birmingham is anticipated to create several distinct shifts for passengers, commercial trade, and local aviation industries:

  • For West Midlands Travelers and Diaspora: Passengers visiting friends and relatives in Egypt or transferring to secondary destinations in North Africa and the Middle East will save significant journey time by bypassing London airports or mainland Europe hubs.
  • For Leisure Tourists and Cultural Expeditions: Midlands residents gain direct access to Cairo’s cultural landmarks, including the Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, while simplifying travel connections to domestic tourist circuits in Luxor, Aswan, and the Red Sea.
  • For Business and Commercial Bilateral Trade: Direct transit creates new opportunities for corporate commerce, university exchange programmes, and trade partnerships between Midlands-based industries and Egyptian commercial markets.
  • For Regional Airport Competition: The route positions Birmingham Airport as a stronger competitor against other UK regional gateways by capturing mid-country traffic that previously leaked to London hubs.
